Which style of BCD

A jacket BCD wraps around you and is the most forgiving at the surface, which is why training agencies use them; it is the sensible default for a new diver. A back-inflate BCD puts the air cell behind you, keeps the front clear and gives a flatter, more horizontal trim underwater at the cost of a slight forward lean on the surface until you get used to it. Travel BCDs strip weight and padding to get a full jacket under two kilograms for airline baggage limits. Backplate and wing systems separate the harness from the air cell so each can be swapped independently; they are the standard for technical diving and increasingly popular with recreational divers who want a clean, modular kit.

Fit, lift and weight systems

Fit matters more than features. A BCD should hold the cylinder snug against your back without lifting over your head when you lean forward, and the cummerbund should close comfortably over your thickest suit. Lift is quoted in kilograms or pounds; recreational single-cylinder diving rarely needs more than 15 to 18 kg, while twin sets and steel cylinders need more. Integrated weight pockets are convenient, but many divers still carry some lead on a belt so their trim does not change if they have to ditch weights.

We list the lift, weight and cylinder compatibility on each product page. Sizing varies between brands, so use the size chart on the product and, if you are between sizes, tell us your height, weight and suit thickness and we will advise before you order.
