Three pieces, one afternoon

Snorkelling needs a mask that fits, a snorkel that clears easily and fins that will not blister. A snorkel set bundles all three at a saving, and is the quickest way to kit out a family before a holiday. Buying separately lets you match a low-volume mask to a narrow face or choose longer fins for stronger swimmers.

Dry, semi-dry or classic

A dry-top snorkel has a float valve that seals when you duck-dive, so nothing comes in; it is the best choice for beginners and anyone who dislikes clearing. A semi-dry uses a splash guard to keep waves out at the surface but floods when you dive, then clears with a sharp exhale. A classic J-snorkel is what freedivers and scuba divers use: simple, nothing to fail, easy to clear. Snorkel vests add flotation for weaker swimmers and children and are required by some tour operators.

Every set and mask lists its sizing and whether it is suitable for children. If you are buying for a family, tell us ages and swimming ability and we will put a shortlist together.
