Choosing a speargun

The right gun is decided by where you hunt. In low visibility or around rock and weed, a short 60 to 75 cm gun that swings fast beats a long one you cannot bring to bear. In clear blue water a 100 to 130 cm gun, or a roller gun with the same range in a shorter barrel, reaches fish that will not let you close. Band guns are simple, silent and easy to maintain; pneumatic guns are compact and powerful with nothing to tangle; roller guns double the band travel for more power without more length. Polespears and Hawaiian slings are where many spearos start and remain the most sporting way to hunt.

The rest of the rig

A camouflage open-cell wetsuit keeps you warm and unnoticed on long surface waits; 3 mm for warm water, 5 mm for temperate, 7 mm for cold. A float and line is your safety marker and your fish carrier; a reel on the gun does the same job for divers who hunt in current. Add a stringer, a knife you can reach, and low-volume mask and long fins from the freediving range. Our guides on gun length and starting out cover the decisions in more detail.
