Fit first, features second
A mask that leaks ruins a dive no matter what it cost, so fit comes before everything. The test is simple: hold the mask to your face without the strap, inhale gently through your nose, and it should stay put without pressing on your brow or upper lip. Narrow faces suit low-volume freediving-style masks; wider faces suit larger single-lens frames. Single-lens masks give an open view with nothing across the bridge of your nose. Twin-lens masks sit closer to the eyes, clear with less air and accept prescription lenses. Full-face masks cover the mouth as well and are used for communications, cold water and some public-safety work.
Lenses, tints and prescriptions
Clear silicone skirts let in more light; black skirts cut glare and are preferred by photographers and spearfishers. Tinted or mirrored lenses reduce glare in bright shallow water but darken deeper dives. Many twin-lens masks accept drop-in corrective lenses in half-dioptre steps; look for the prescription lenses sub-category and check the compatibility list on each mask.
Every mask here lists the frame type, skirt colour and whether prescription lenses are available. If you cannot try one on, tell us your face shape and any glasses prescription and we will suggest a shortlist before you order.
