Match the suit to the water
Thermal protection is the part of a kit most divers get wrong, usually by buying too thin. As a starting point: a 1 mm skin or rashguard for sun and sting protection above 28°C; a 3 mm full suit or shorty from 24 to 28°C; a 5 mm from 18 to 24°C; a 7 mm or semi-dry from 12 to 18°C; and a drysuit with undergarments below that or for long, repetitive dives in anything under about 20°C. Everyone feels the cold differently, and a suit that fits snugly beats a thicker one that flushes.
Wetsuit, semi-dry or drysuit
A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water that your body warms, so fit matters more than anything: no gaps at the neck, wrists or lower back. A semi-dry adds seals at the wrists, ankles and neck to slow the flush and is the sweet spot for temperate water. A drysuit keeps water out entirely and lets you adjust warmth by changing the undergarment, which is why cold-water and technical divers use them year round. Drysuits need a short course to use safely, and we say so on every drysuit page.
Boots, gloves and hoods are sized separately and listed in their own categories. Sizing between brands varies more than you might expect; use the chart on the product page and, if you are between sizes, tell us your height, weight and chest measurement and we will recommend before you order.
